Royal Brighton Yacht Club

One hundred and fifty years after two gentlemen scrubbing down their boats on a Brighton beach talked each other into a race, Royal Brighton Yacht Club has become one of Victoria's oldest and largest sailing institutions, with more than 1,700 members and a reach that extends far beyond its marina. The membership takes in racing keelboat and dinghy sailors, cruisers, women's and youth programs, juniors — and people who never sail at all, from the Icebergers who swim off the club year-round to gym and social members. That breadth gives the place an energy that purely racing clubs rarely manage.

The sailing pedigree, though, is the spine. This is Jock Sturrock's club — multiple national champion, skipper of Gretel in Australia's first America's Cup challenge in 1962, four-time Olympian and one of the five inaugural Legends of Australian Sport inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. It is also John Bertrand's club — the Australia II skipper, Olympic Finn bronze medallist and dual Etchells world champion who still sails here — and Mark Turnbull's, the 470 Olympic gold medallist of 2000.

The Etchells fleet at Brighton is described by Australian Sailing as one of the strongest club fleets anywhere in the world, and the club's race-management reputation stretches back to its inter-club regattas of the 1870s. Sail Melbourne International, world championships in the Finn, Dragon, Etchells and RS100 classes, 9er nationals and Optimist states have all been run off this beach, and each December the George Mac regatta keeps a long tradition alive.

In 2025 the club marked its sesquicentenary with a limited-edition history published through the Royal Historical Society of Victoria.

The school's partnership is the distinctive piece. Royal Brighton teams with Brighton Grammar School to deliver the BGS+ Learn to Sail program for children aged nine to twelve, with sessions run out of the club's Jock Sturrock Centre — a beachside training centre bearing the name of the club's most celebrated sailor, where a child learning to tack does so under the gaze of a name synonymous with Australian sailing at its bravest.

Beyond that, the club operates as an Australian Sailing-accredited Discover Sailing Centre staffed by qualified coaches and instructors. The standard junior entry point, Tackers for seven-to-twelve-year-olds in Ozi Opti dinghies, runs in school-holiday and term blocks; from there, junior and youth instructed sessions on Sundays feed directly into off-the-beach short-course racing, while adults can learn in dinghies or keelboats, take powerboat courses or book private lessons.

Racing development is where Brighton flexes. The one-design fleets — VX One, Dragon, the 2.4mR and that formidable Etchells division — race the Centre Course every Saturday in season, and the regular class list reads like a dinghy show catalogue: RS100, 49er and 49erFX, WASZP, Optimist, Open Skiff, 420, RS Aero and RS Quest, plus sports boats and kite and foiling boards.

The calendar never really stops: Saturdays host keelboat inshore and passage racing alongside the one-designs, Wednesday afternoons bring pursuit racing, a Wednesday twilight series runs through daylight saving, and Thursdays are given over to off-the-beach sprint racing. The annual BLiSS regatta anchors the women's program as part of the Port Phillip Women's Championship Series, and the Cruising Group organises regular Bass Strait passages, with members also venturing into ORCV offshore races, the Sydney to Hobart and northern winter regattas.

Brighton's Golden Mile needs little introduction to Melbourne sailors. The club occupies the foreshore at Middle Brighton alongside Brighton Pier, a short walk from the Church Street shops, with the famous bathing boxes up the beach and the city skyline across the water. The physical plant matches the club's scale: a floating marina of 245 wet berths catering for boats from eight to eighteen metres — rated by the club as among the finest on Port Phillip — plus a hardstand for 60 boats served by two jib cranes, added in 1987 to house a large one-design fleet.

A redeveloped forecourt and basement handle off-the-beach dinghy storage, and the clubhouse layers a Members' Lounge, bistro, deck and forecourt plus an upstairs function space between the marina and the road.

The sailing water is northern and central Port Phillip, and the club itself describes it as up there with the very best — a claim few Victorian sailors would argue with. Summer sea breezes arrive with dependable regularity, the bay offers room for windward-leeward courses, passage races and long offshore starts, and the Melbourne weather pattern keeps tacticians honest with its shifts.

For the women's championship series and the big one-design fleets, the Centre Course area provides open water clear of the shipping channels, while juniors in Ozi Optis work the flatter water close inshore under instructor cover. It is also a practical base for cruising: Bass Strait lies a day's sail south through the Heads, which explains why the Cruising Group's program ranges so far. Keelboat, dinghy or foiling board — the venue handles all of it, every week of the year.

The founding story deserves its retelling. In August 1875, two gentlemen scrubbing down their boats on Middle Brighton beach fell to arguing over whose was faster, and settled it with a race. One month later, fifteen men formed the Brighton Sailing Club; by April 1876, renamed the Brighton Yacht Club, it counted 57 members with thirteen boats on the register.

A modest first building went up on the site in 1877, and the second inter-club regatta in 1878 drew 34 entries from four clubs competing for more than £70 in prize money — the beginning of a race-management reputation that has never faded. A new clubhouse opened in 1898, and by the turn of the century membership had reached 167 despite the grinding depression of the 1890s.

The club spread down the coast in 1903, opening a branch at Black Rock that eventually split away as today's independent Black Rock Yacht Club, while at home the pier was extended in 1904, a slipway built and the clubhouse enlarged in 1907, and a further extension completed in 1925.

Vice-regal patronage ran deep — Governor Lord Brassey joined in 1896, Governor-General Lord Forster in 1921, and Governor-General Lord Stonehaven and Governor the Earl of Stradbroke both in 1926 — and in 1924 King George V granted the Royal Warrant that made it Royal Brighton Yacht Club. The modern marina arrived in the late 1960s and was extended in 1979 and 2004, with the hardstand following in 1987. The Sturrock era brought America's Cup challenges and Olympic campaigns, and the tradition continued through Bertrand's 1983 triumph and Turnbull's Sydney gold. In 2025 the club turned 150, publishing a full modern history to mark the occasion.
