Royal Yacht Club of Victoria

Introduction

• The Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) is a large mixed yacht club located at 120 Nelson Place, Williamstown, on the Williamstown waterfront beside Gem Pier. The club describes its foundation as May 1853 and today operates a marina, an expansive hardstand and a dedicated training centre, supporting more than 200 yachts on its register and a membership in excess of one thousand.

Sailing and Events

• RYCV runs keelboat and off-the-beach racing, twilight series and hosts state, national and international regattas. The club is recognised for strong race management capability and a deep volunteer base that supports major event delivery.

Facilities

• The Williamstown site includes a marina (berths), a large hardstand for slipping and maintenance, clubrooms with dining and bar facilities, meeting rooms, change rooms and an open lawn facing the water. The clubhouse (rebuilt in brick after a 1970 fire) provides dining and function spaces that open onto a waterfront deck.

Training and youth

• The Royals Training Centre provides a broad syllabus: junior Tackers and OutThere youth programs, Australian Sailing dinghy and adult keelboat courses, RYA cruising scheme through to Yachtmaster levels, powerboat and marine radio courses, and short practical courses (diesel maintenance, crane and MOB). The centre delivers school programs and training designed both for members and external students.

The keelboat and cruising pathway is what sets the Royals Training Centre apart from most Victorian sailing schools. Alongside Australian Sailing's adult keelboat and small-boat dinghy courses, the centre delivers the RYA cruising scheme from Competent Crew right through to Yachtmaster Offshore — an internationally recognised ticket rarely offered at club level in this state. Powerboat training runs to the Victorian licence standard, and short courses in marine radio, first aid and diesel engine maintenance round out a syllabus aimed squarely at people who intend to own, crew or charter real yachts rather than simply dabble.

Junior teaching follows the national Tackers pathway, after which teenagers can step into the OutThere Sailing program designed for thirteen-to-seventeen-year-olds. The accredited Discover Sailing Centre also works directly with schools, running programs for primary, secondary and even tertiary students, and members can hire the club's Pacer dinghies to keep practising between courses.

On the racing side of development, the club contributes the Val Hodge Trophy to the Port Phillip Women's Championship Series, giving women sailors a dedicated inter-club contest on the Williamstown course area. The breadth is deliberate: a child can arrive on a school excursion, progress through junior and youth squads, crew on a keelboat by their late teens and emerge years later with an offshore yachtmaster qualification — all without leaving Nelson Place.

Few clubs in the country can offer that entire ladder under one burgee, which is precisely why the training centre draws students from well beyond the club's own membership, and why so many Williamstown crews count a Royals course certificate somewhere in their sailing CVs.

Williamstown sits on a peninsula at the mouth of the Yarra, roughly thirteen kilometres from central Melbourne, and the clubhouse looks north-east across Hobsons Bay to the city skyline — a view that visiting sailors at the 2015 Para World Championships remarked on repeatedly. The address, 120 Nelson Place, puts the club in the middle of Williamstown's historic maritime precinct, with Gem Pier alongside and the old seaport's pubs, chandleries and heritage streetscapes at the door. It is one of the few major yacht clubs in Australia where the clubhouse terrace genuinely fronts a working piece of nineteenth-century harbour waterfront.

Racing takes place on Hobsons Bay, the broad northern lobe of Port Phillip, and the club's own description of the venue — reliable, steady breezes with little or no current — explains why it keeps winning major event allocations. Flat, predictable water close to a capital city is a rare combination, and it suited the Para Worlds fleet of 2.4mR, SKUD18 and Sonar keelboats just as well as it suits weekend club racing. Ashore, the facilities match the club's scale.

Marina construction began in 1967 and berths now accommodate much of the two-hundred-plus-boat register; a large hardstand handles trailer and maintenance work; and the brick clubhouse, extended in 2002 with new offices, meeting rooms and a bigger deck, houses a restaurant and bar opening onto a lawn that runs toward the water. Members can race a twilight series, step off the dock and be at dinner on the deck within minutes, with the Melbourne skyline lighting up across the bay.

The club's own account begins in May 1853 with the formation of the Port Phillip Yacht Club, whose earliest races were sailed on Corio Bay off Geelong before activity settled on Hobsons Bay. Honesty requires noting that this date is contested: a Victorian Heritage Council record describes a Victoria Yacht Club established in 1856, while the Jubilee Yacht Association's history traces the line through a Victoria Yacht Club founded in 1872 that later became the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria. The club holds to 1853, and that is the date on which its oldest-club claim and its anniversary celebrations rest — the 160th was celebrated in 2013 with a gala evening held at the MCG.

What followed is documented in the club's volunteer-run archive. The club shifted to its present Williamstown site in 1873, the same year it won permission to fly the Colony of Victoria's Blue Ensign; in 1886 Queen Victoria granted royal privileges, the Admiralty issued a Full Warrant entitling the club to the fleet's Blue Ensign, and "Royal" entered the name. The register in that era carried vessels like the Millar brothers' 400-ton schooner Undine and the 35-ton Cushie Doo.

Members kept their boats at Williamstown but gathered in the city — first at Flinders Street's Port Phillip Club Hotel, later at Old Temple Court in Collins Street — before leasing Wickliffe House on the St Kilda esplanade in 1905 and finally consolidating at Williamstown in 1935. The 5.5 metre Olympic fleet raced here in 1956; marina works began in 1967; fire destroyed the wooden clubhouse in 1970, and a brick replacement opened barely twelve months afterwards to serve the membership, which then stood at 350.

Williamstown-sponsored Challenge 12 carried the club into the 1983 America's Cup, and in 1996 Terra Firma became the first club boat to win the Sydney Hobart, with Ian 'Barney' Walker principal helmsman.
