Somers Yacht Club

By the numbers, Somers Yacht Club is one of the more remarkable off-the-beach operations in Victoria. When Australian Sailing profiled the club in 2022 it counted 781 members over the age of eight, split almost evenly between sailing and social members, with nearly two hundred juniors on the books. The statistic that really stands out, though, is gender: 48 percent of the membership is female, and around 40 percent of the sailors on the water are women and girls — figures most Australian sailing clubs can only envy. Club racing regularly puts sixty off-the-beach boats on the course, crewed by sailors aged from seven to eighty-four.

The club calls itself a club for members run by members, and its stated mission is to be "a volunteer, inclusive community where sailing unites families and friends". It sits in Category B of Australian Sailing's affiliation scale, and everything about it — the foreshore clubhouse, the rescue boats crewed by volunteers, the Friday night bar — reflects that self-description.

The location helps: Somers sits at the Mornington Peninsula's south-eastern tip on Western Port Bay, a bush-fringed shoreline where reliable afternoon southerlies blow in off Bass Strait. The fleet is purely off-the-beach, a mixed armada of catamarans and monohulls from A Class cats down to Optimists. More than half the members are not permanent Somers residents — they come from Melbourne and beyond because the sailing, and the community built around it, is worth the drive. For a village of about two thousand people, that is some pull.

The program that best expresses Somers' character is Sassy She Sails, a dedicated coaching and racing stream for women and girls — male crew members are permitted — that puts organisational weight behind the club's striking 48-percent-female membership. Rather than treating women's participation as a pleasant accident, Somers programmes it, and the result is a fleet where two in five sailors are women or girls.

Formal instruction runs through the Somers Sailing School, a recognised Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Centre whose trained instructors take students from total beginner level — minimum age nine — through to race-course and competitive courses. A Junior Fleet Program looks after the nearly two hundred junior members, and youth and young adult event programs keep older sailors engaged beyond their junior years.

The sailing season runs October to April, with standard racing on Saturday afternoons backed by the club's own Sea Rescue facilities, and the calendar mixes in cruises, novelty events, social sailing and short-course racing so that not every weekend is a championship. The fleet list is a sailing historian's delight: A Class, Taipan, Mosquito, Hobie 16, 14 and Dragoon among the cats, and Optimist, Sabre, 125, Pacer, Hobie Hawk, Paper Tiger, Tasar, Laser, Finn, Impulse and Contender among the monohulls.

Somers also steps up as a host, having run the 2017 Sabre Victorian State Titles and the 2019 Victorian Tasar State Championships, with the Victorian Open Skiff Championship scheduled for February 2026. The same year, a Somers team won the Bright Brewery Teams Racing Regatta, an inter-club match-racing contest — evidence that the coaching pipeline produces sailors who can win away from home as well as on it.

The clubhouse stands at 99 Alexandra Avenue, Somers, postcode 3927, on a bush foreshore lease looking out over Western Port Bay. Australian Sailing's profile of the club highlights the setting's defining gift: reliable onshore southerlies rolling in off Bass Strait, the kind of steady afternoon breeze that lets a race committee set a course with confidence and lets a fleet of mixed dinghies and cats race without the lottery of fluky winds. The foreshore itself is unhurried and green, with the clubhouse, bar, boat storage and sea rescue boats arranged along the leased strip, and views across the bay providing the backdrop to Friday night drinks.

Somers village, population around two thousand, lies seventy-two kilometres south-east of Melbourne on the Peninsula's quieter, Western Port side — far enough from the Port Phillip holiday strip that the beach stays calm even in January. The village takes its name from Lord Somers, a Governor of Victoria, and the club formally acknowledges the Bunurong people as the Traditional Owners of its sailing ground.

The bay itself differs markedly from Port Phillip: Western Port is tidal, island-studded and fringed with mangroves and sandy shallows, giving local racing a more open-water feel than the bay beaches further west. Somers also anchors one end of the Montalto Marathon, the annual long race for dinghies, cats, sailboards, trailables and keelboats that runs between Somers and Flinders — a course that shows off the best of Western Port sailing.

Weekly shore life is simple and social: Friday drinks at the bar, Friday bridge, and the Windward News newsletter keeping the far-flung membership connected.

Somers Yacht Club dates from 1963, when a series of community meetings drew around one hundred people interested in forming a sailing club on the Western Port foreshore. From that show of hands the essentials followed in the classic volunteer sequence: a site was chosen, a foreshore lease negotiated, and the members built the clubhouse themselves. The names of the founders and the identity of the first commodore are not recorded in the club's public material — a gap that says something about a club that has always foregrounded the collective over the individual.

What the record does show is sixty years of steady, member-powered operation. The club stayed deliberately off-the-beach while other Peninsula clubs chased marinas, building instead around beach launching, its own sea rescue capability and a social calendar — Friday drinks and bridge among them — that held families together between seasons. The membership geography is telling: more than half of the 781 members counted in 2022 were not permanent Somers residents, meaning the club has long functioned as a destination community rather than merely a village facility.

The COVID years tested that model and the club's response is part of its modern story: takeaway meals, care packs, online wine tastings and hardship support for memberships kept people connected through lockdowns, and the proportion of genuinely local members grew in the aftermath. Along the way the club has earned a hosting resume — Sabre state titles in 2017, the Victorian Tasar championship in 2019, the Open Skiff state championship booked for 2026 — and, in the same 2026 season, a teams-racing win at the Bright Brewery regatta.

For a club built by volunteers in 1963, the model has proved durable.
