Programmable calculators, dedicated navigation computers and phone applications embed the almanac ephemeris and the cosine formula, taking sextant altitude, time, height of eye and index error and returning intercept and azimuth from the dead reckoning position directly. This removes assumed position rounding and table interpolation. Since the usual purpose of celestial work is independence from electronics, prudent practice keeps a paper almanac, tables and worked forms aboard as the true backup.
