Gladstone Yacht Club

There is a yacht in Australian ocean racing folklore called Wistari — designed and built in Gladstone in 1965 by Port Curtis Sailing Club yachtsman Noel Patrick, winner of the Brisbane to Gladstone on four occasions from 1971 to 1982, and holder of the race's aggregate point-score trophy. That single boat says a great deal about the club that produced her: practical, self-reliant, and deeply woven into one of Queensland's great offshore contests. Port Curtis Sailing Club, which trades publicly as the Gladstone Yacht Club from its clubhouse at 1 Goondoon Street, has been the finishing destination of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race since the event's earliest years, and its members were active supporters of the very first race in 1949.

The club operates in a setting few sailing organisations can claim — within the multi-commodity Port of Gladstone, inside the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, where bulk carriers and cruising yachts share the same horizon. From its waterfront base on Auckland Creek, with a licensed clubhouse and harbour-view veranda, the club runs an accredited Australian Sailing training school, a Saturday-afternoon sailing program, and a fleet that ranges from racing and cruising yachts, both monohull and multihull, down to Sabots, Lasers, Impulses and O'pen BICs, plus an original Diamond and a Moth.

Port Curtis carries its years well. Established in March 1941 under the name Port Curtis Aquatic Club, and taking its present name in 1947, it has weathered wartime restrictions, a cyclone, a decade-long volunteer clubhouse build and a late-1970s amalgamation to emerge as a heritage-listed institution that has twice been named Best Small Social Club in reciprocal-club listings. Under commodore Ian Williams, it remains what it has always been: Gladstone's sailing home.

The distinguishing feature of training at Port Curtis is its depth of commitment to school-age sailing, a thread that runs back to 1961 when the club purchased a fleet of ten Sabot trainers and brought sailing into Gladstone High School — making that school, by the club's account, the first in Queensland to offer sailing as an official school sport. That pioneer spirit found modern form in 2010, when Port Curtis became an accredited Discover Sailing Centre, and Australian Sailing's own centre-in-focus profile records the results: 162 participants welcomed since accreditation, with 67 per cent juniors and an even 50:50 gender balance, a genuinely equitable introduction to the sport.

The course menu covers the national pathway efficiently — Tackers 1 and 2 for children, the Adult Start Sailing levels, and Powerboat Handling courses — while Saturday-morning Green Fleet sessions give new junior sailors a coached step between learn-to-sail courses and club racing. The club also opens its doors for annual Discover Sailing Days, and its centre serves a regional role beyond Gladstone itself, hosting instructor professional development run by Australian Sailing for the wider Central Queensland region. Club sailing takes place on Saturday afternoons from twelve noon, and the breadth of the fleet — Sabots, Impulse dinghies, O'pen BICs and Lasers alongside keelboats, with an original Diamond and a Moth in the mix — means graduates have somewhere to go at every level, from off-the-beach dinghies to offshore racing yachts.

The offshore dimension deserves emphasis, because Port Curtis trains sailors in the shadow of a serious ocean-racing tradition. This is the host club and finish destination of the annual Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, and the club also initiated the Gladstone to Bundaberg, Gladstone to Keppel Island and Gladstone to Cairns ocean races. Club member Wally Walters showed what that pathway could produce, winning two Queensland championships and finishing third nationally in an RL24 he built himself.

Support has come from the Gladstone Regional Council, through its Community Investment Program and, during the pandemic years, the council's Rise Up Fund, helping to sustain the operation through recent times.

Gladstone's harbour is one of Queensland's great natural ports, and the club occupies a privileged position within it. The clubhouse sits on Auckland Creek — the inlet at the heart of old Gladstone — with direct access out to Gladstone Harbour, in the middle of a working multi-commodity port that lies inside the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Sailing here means sharing the water with one of Australia's busiest export harbours, a juxtaposition of coal loaders and cruising spinnakers that gives Port Curtis a character quite unlike any resort-town club.

The clubhouse itself is a destination. It is a fully licensed, waterfront venue with a Captain's Deck and veranda overlooking the harbour, open to members and available for functions, and its quality has been recognised beyond the sailing world — reciprocal-club listings record that Port Curtis has twice been awarded Best Small Social Club. The address is 1 Goondoon Street, Gladstone, and the sailing and accounts office can be reached at admin@gyc.com.au.

The waters have shaped the club's sailing from the beginning. In the early days crews launched off the mud flats below a landing ramp, racing courses from the Creek out towards Barney Point — a far cry from today's infrastructure, but the same harbour. Modern sailing ranges widely: harbour courses for the dinghy and trailer fleets, and open Coral Sea water for the club's ocean-racing calendar, which has historically included the Brisbane to Gladstone finish as well as passages to Bundaberg, Keppel Island and Cairns.

Auckland Creek's sheltered reaches suit training and Green Fleet sessions, while the broader harbour and its seaward approaches offer the depth and breeze that offshore crews need. Few clubs anywhere can move a sailor from a mud-flat launching ramp heritage to World Heritage-listed reef waters within a single afternoon's sail — Port Curtis can, and does.

The roots of competitive sailing at Port Curtis reach back to the 1880s, when Gladstone stood as Queensland's northernmost rail terminus and every tonne of cargo bound further north moved under sail; informal regattas among those working sail cargo boats planted the seed. The formal club dates from March 1941, when it was established as the Port Curtis Aquatic Club with competition aquatic and sailing events at its core, taking its present name, Port Curtis Sailing Club, in 1947. The timing was audacious — Australia was at war — and the club's wartime record is remarkable: regattas continued even though Port Curtis was a restricted military zone, with every crew member required to carry a permit and sailors occasionally picked up mid-race by the Volunteer Defence Corps.

The post-war years brought the club's defining infrastructure saga. After a cyclone struck Gladstone in 1949, work began on a new clubhouse using timber from cyclone-felled trees, with members driving foundation piles through reclaimed land over the mud flats. The volunteer build took close to a decade, completed just ahead of the 1959 Easter Regatta; the building marked its fiftieth anniversary in March 2009 and is now heritage listed. The Easter Regatta itself dates from 1950.

Ocean racing runs through the club's identity. The first Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race in 1949 was organised by the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club with active Port Curtis support; the club fielded its first entries in 1950 and has been the race's host and finish destination ever since. Club member Noel Patrick designed and built Wistari in 1965, and she won the event four times between 1971 and 1982, holding the aggregate point-score honour, the Sea Prince Trophy — a silver replica of the 1949 winner, donated by the club, whose curious footnote is that the original Sea Prince, abandoned in the Tasman Sea in 1971, turned up drifting in the Coral Sea two years later.

Patrick also took out the inaugural Gladstone to Cairns Race aboard Wistari, one of several ocean events the club initiated alongside Gladstone to Bundaberg and Gladstone to Keppel Island.

Hard times came in the late 1970s, when financial difficulty pushed the club into a merger with the Air Sea Rescue organisation and the Power Boat Club in order to secure licensed sporting-club status; membership was reported at 480 in 1980. From that pragmatic rescue, the club rebuilt into the accredited training centre, regatta host and heritage-listed clubhouse that Gladstone sailors know today.
