Southport Yacht Club

Southport Yacht Club is a multi-location yacht and watersports club on the Gold Coast with sailing programs, a 300-berth marina at its Main Beach clubhouse, waterfront dining and event spaces, and youth and adult sailing schools. The club lists marina facilities and marina information (marina map, rates, maintenance program and handbook), a chandlery, 24-hour fuel, and multiple waterfront sites including Main Beach (Main Beach clubhouse), Hollywell (sailing squadron), Oxenford Watersports Centre (academy and youth sailing), and the private Dux Anchorage on South Stradbroke Island.

The Sailing Academy at the Hollywell squadron is the club's training heart, delivering learn-to-sail courses for children and adults, structured junior and youth programs and children's sailing camps, all on the calm Broadwater behind the Spit. Tackers, Australian Sailing's introductory pathway, runs across levels 1 to 3 at the sheltered Oxenford Watersports Centre, where a seven-session Tackers One course in Term 1 2025 was priced at $400; the Oxenford base also hosts school sailing programs and paddle-boarding.

Graduates of the junior pathway feed into a racing structure divided into six streams: offshore and inshore fleets, Thursday twilight racing, dinghy and catamaran off-the-beach divisions and the Etchells keelboat fleet, which races offshore and in the Broadwater and shares a three-way rotation for hosting state titles. The academy's output speaks through its alumni, most notably Mathew Belcher, whose Olympic and world championship success began with lessons at Hollywell, alongside Jack Sherring, Tom Siganto and Kyle O'Connell.

Event hosting extends the development pathway to the top of the sport. Sail Paradise, the club's offshore regatta, reaches its 17th edition in 2026 and will fold the Australian Yachting Championships into its program for the first time; the Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race, inaugurated on 1 August 2024, covers 520 nautical miles; the Coral Sea Pointscore Series adds further offshore miles; and the club partners with Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club to run the Pittwater to Paradise Regatta.

The Broadwater also serves as the finish of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's Sydney to Gold Coast Yacht Race, a 384-nautical-mile contest introduced in 1986. For a junior starting in an Opti at Oxenford, the ladder to ocean racing is visible from the first lesson.

The Broadwater shapes everything about sailing at Southport. This sheltered waterway behind the Southport Spit gives the club protected inshore racing and training water, while offshore fleets pass out through the Gold Coast Seaway into the Pacific. The Main Beach base on Macarthur Parade fronts a 300-berth marina that, according to Superyacht Australia, includes the country's largest floating megayacht berth, a 160-metre structure accommodating vessels up to 135 metres with power supply to 600 amps; the marina also operates as an Australian Port of Entry, clearing internationally arriving and departing vessels.

Ashore at Main Beach the club runs a waterfront restaurant, bars including the 4Shore Bar and the Waterscape pontoon bar, a function centre, a gymnasium, a 24-hour fuel jetty and a hardstand. The Hollywell Sailing Squadron, at 1 Marina Crescent, is the sailing-focused base, with a bar and bistro, boat ramp, marina crane, facilities for trailerable boats, a private beach and a grassed rigging area; dolphins reside in the surrounding Broadwater, and dugongs are occasionally sighted near the academy beach.

Up the river at Oxenford, the Watersports Centre on Watersport Lane occupies calm, protected water chosen for junior training, Tackers and school programs, with paddle-boarding on offer alongside sailing. The fourth location, Dux Anchorage on South Stradbroke Island, is a private campground venue that lets members cruise to their own island stopover. The shelter of this network of waterways is what allows one club to run beginner classes, twilight racing and offshore race starts from the same stretch of coast, shifting each activity to the water that suits it best.

It began on 5 April 1946, when around 70 people gathered at the Southport Council Chambers in Nerang Street under the chairmanship of the Mayor, John Proud, and elected Lindsay Firth as the first Commodore. The roots, though, reach back into the war years, when local boat owners began taking wounded returned servicemen out on the Broadwater for rehabilitative sailing days, picnicking at Jumpinpin; those owners became foundation members.

The founding objectives were practical ones: secure a clubhouse site, mark and beacon the channels, upgrade picnic spots, press for a deeper main channel, and assist vessels crossing the treacherous Southport bar, which members did frequently. Town planner Dr Karl Langer set aside a choice Broadwater frontage for the club within his Main Beach precinct plan, and Cecil Carey, a Southport storekeeper who went on to serve many years in state parliament, helped drive the establishment.

A year or so later the club took in Hollywell's Southport Trainee Squadron, a junior body dating from 1926, meaning the junior arm is two decades older than the club itself. Competitive milestones accumulated steadily: the Etchells Gold Coast fleet was established at Main Beach in 1988, displaced in 1992 when the hardstand was taken over for the Australia One America's Cup challenge, then re-established at Hollywell in 1996 once a state gaming-fund grant had funded a replacement hardstand and marina.

Club crews won the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 2010, Sabot national titles in 2011 and Etchells national titles in 2014, and the club launched Sail Paradise in 2012 and hosted the Nacra Infusion World Championships in 2013. Mathew Belcher's rise from Hollywell lessons to Olympic gold in 2012 and Tokyo, silver in Rio and more than seven world titles crowns the modern record, and Australian Sailing's Queensland Club of the Year award for 2025, following three consecutive state club awards and hall of fame induction, confirms the club's standing.

An Easter regatta at Southport was being sailed as early as 1897, so the club nurtures a sailing culture far older than its own charter.
