Townsville Yacht Club

Townsville Yacht Club is a waterfront yacht club in South Townsville (1 Plume Street) offering organized sailing activities and events, a waterside restaurant and bar, and marina facilities with a berth-enquiry option. The club promotes competitive and social yachting, regattas (including Magnetic Island Race Week), courses and registrations, and hosts functions and events overlooking its marina.

Learn-to-sail here means keelboats as much as dinghies, and that tilt toward bigger boats is the program's signature. The club offers Discover Sailing courses — keelboat courses included — run by qualified instructors in small groups, with boats and lifejackets supplied and no prior experience required; the honest caveat is that formal Discover Sailing Centre accreditation is not claimed on the club's site, so the courses run under the club's own banner. Racing is the larger engine.

The yacht racing season stretches from February to November, and its architecture rewards consistency: the Commodore's Cup, contested from late February until late October, blends offshore and inshore racing into a single season-long contest, won in 2019 by Akarana. Every Wednesday evening the Twilight Sail offers the gentler entry point — a short pursuit race out on Cleveland Bay, after which crews head back for presentations, a social hour and the raffle draw, a format that doubles as the club's weekly open house.

September brings the centrepiece: Magnetic Island Race Week, the club's principal event, first held in 2007 and now a fixture that draws fleets from well beyond North Queensland. For cruisers and motor boaters, the marina itself functions as a program of sorts, with 162 pontoon berths taking boats from ten to twenty metres. The membership base — over a thousand strong — means courses, twilight racing and the season calendar all feed off a large pool of participants, and the equal standing of power and sail within the club gives the sailing program an unusually broad recreational hinterland.

Details and enrolment run through the club office at Plume Street, reachable by phone or the admin email published on the site.

Plume Street puts the club at the seam between city and sea. The address — number 1, South Townsville — sits at the edge of the CBD on the bank of Ross Creek, where the creek's reach opens toward Cleveland Bay; the club holds freehold title to its land and a thirty-year lease over the adjacent seabed, the tenure that underpins the marina. That marina is the site's anchor: 162 pontoon berths accommodating boats from ten to twenty metres, completed in 2009 at a cost of eight million dollars, and described in the club's strategic planning documents in the loftiest terms.

The clubhouse above it was refurbished in 2010, its bar, dining areas, showers, laundry and toilets all upgraded, and the deck now looks out over the berths. Facilities extend to a restaurant, the Captain's Bar and function rooms, with trading hours running Wednesday to Sunday — until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays — and the doors closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The sailing water is Cleveland Bay, the wide, island-studded bay that frames Townsville's seaward side; racing and the Wednesday twilight sails both take place on its waters, and Magnetic Island, which gives the September race week its name and its race tracks, sits just offshore. A short walk from the clubhouse, a piece of older waterfront history survives: the old careening-ramp rails from the original club's Ross Creek days remain embedded near the Metropole site.

The precinct also hosts a second sporting community — the Townsville Skindiving Club, formed in 1982, is based at the same Plume Street address — making this corner of the city a genuinely multi-sport marine hub on Townsville's southern flank.

The club's own account starts in a shop. In the 1950s, a dinghy and fixed-keel sailing club operated from a long-demolished Palmer Street premises next door to the Metropole Hotel, with members' boats lying on swing moorings in Ross Creek out front. The strands that would eventually merge began separating and recombining soon after: the Townsville Cruising Yacht Club was established around 1967, and Townsville Motor Boat Club Limited followed in 1968.

In 1979 the sailing club merged with six other water-sport-oriented clubs and shifted to premises on The Strand — a grand consolidation that proved fragile. By 1984 the amalgamated entity was in liquidation, leaving the sailors homeless. The rescue came from the motor boaters: the Townsville Motor Boat Club held the Plume Street lease and asked the sailing fraternity to come across, the combined body taking the name Townsville Motor Boat & Yacht Club Limited.

The Strategic Plan records the combination with the Townsville Cruising Yacht Club in that same year, 1984; the club's sailing pages describe the Cruising Yacht Club operating from the Motor Boat Club in the early 1980s before being fully incorporated in 1999, at which point the combined organisation became known simply as the Townsville Yacht Club. The company's name change — formalised in 1998 — made Townsville Motor Boat & Yacht Club Limited the legal entity, trading as the Townsville Yacht Club.

On the Plume Street ground, permanence was steadily built: freehold title since 1979, a clubhouse, a thirty-year lease over the adjacent seabed, then the eight-million-dollar, 162-berth marina completed in 2009 and the clubhouse refurbishment of 2010. On the water, a new tradition began in 2007 with the first Magnetic Island Race Week, now the club's principal event. Few Townsville institutions have reinvented themselves so often, or ended the century so securely moored.
