Port Jackson — the water system most people call Sydney Harbour — is one of Australia’s most complex and heavily used urban waterways. From the narrow funnel between North and South Heads into an intricate web of bays, arms and tidal rivers, the harbour combines deep, sheltered channels with shallow coves, busy ferry corridors and narrowly confined tidal currents.
Seen from the water it is a working harbour and a recreational playground: ferries, commuter launches and commercial shipping operate alongside keen keelboat fleets, trailer-sailers and day-sailors enjoying short reaches between coves.
