Sailing education is a network, not a staircase. Your best first course depends on whether you want to try sailing, join a club, crew on cruising yachts, charter overseas, cross oceans or work professionally.
Start with a club taster, Discover Sailing experience, RYA Start Yachting course or a short introduction on a keelboat or dinghy.
Explore this direction →You can start directly with a practical crew course. You do not have to complete a club-racing pathway first.
Explore this direction →Move between systems when it serves your goal. These are useful routes through Australian training, not compulsory sequences.
They overlap, but they are not identical. Choose the system that matches the kind of sailing you want to do.
Australia’s national sporting body for club sailing, dinghies, youth programs, keelboats, racing, instructors, officials and sea-survival training.
A widely used pathway for cruising yachts, navigation, practical skippering, chartering and Yachtmaster Certificates of Competence.
A numbered cruising pathway including ASA 101, 103 and 104, familiar to sailors interested in bareboat cruising and chartering.
A first-time sailor can start with a taster, a club pathway, RYA or American Sailing. None requires completing another system first.
| If you want… | Consider starting with… |
|---|---|
| Fast feedback and strong fundamentals | Dinghy sailing |
| Club sailing and racing | Australian Sailing keelboat or dinghy pathway |
| Cruising on larger yachts | RYA Competent Crew |
| Bareboat chartering | RYA Day Skipper or ASA pathway |
| Owning a cruising yacht | Cruising, technical and safety courses together |
Cruising requires sail trim, navigation, boat handling, weather, safety, crew management, engines, anchoring, docking and judgement.
Become active cruising-yacht crew rather than a passenger: sail handling, steering, ropework, safety and watchkeeping awareness.
Read course information →Build the chartwork, tides, buoyage, weather, COLREGS and passage-planning knowledge needed for short coastal passages.
Read course information →Move from crew to skipper through pilotage, berthing, anchoring, boat handling and crew management.
Read course information →Introductory keelboat sailing and basic skippering skills.
Read course information →Yachtmaster is a competence target, not simply the next course. The largest part of the pathway is genuine command experience: sea miles, night sailing, pilotage and qualifying passages.
Skipper in varied conditions. Log real passages, night sailing and responsibility for the boat and crew.
Develop demanding chartwork, tides, pilotage, meteorology, collision regulations and passage planning.
A preparation course can help, but attending one does not automatically make someone a Yachtmaster.
View the course →Racing sailors develop boat speed, tactics and teamwork. Offshore racing adds navigation, watch systems, emergency procedures and sea-survival requirements.
Sail trim, balance, steering, modes, VMG and adapting to wind and sea state.
Starts, rights of way, mark rounding, shifts, fleet positioning and race strategy.
Night sailing, navigation, watch systems, sea survival and race-specific safety requirements.
Boat owners need more than sailing technique. These supporting skills make a skipper safer and more self-reliant.
Understand daily checks, fuel, cooling, lubrication, starting, charging, common faults, spares and basic maintenance.
Learn batteries, charging, solar, shore power, inverters, protection, cable sizing, corrosion, multimeters and fault finding.
Learn correct VHF procedures, distress communications and the right Australian operator qualification for your equipment.
Practise lifejacket, harness, liferaft, abandon-ship, person-overboard and heavy-weather procedures.
Prepare for injuries and illness when professional help may be hours or days away.
Develop from local forecasts into synoptic charts, fronts, routing, radar interpretation and collision avoidance.
For coastal and offshore sailors, these are part of becoming a competent skipper. Match the radio qualification and safety training to the waters and equipment you use.
An RYA or IYT certificate does not automatically give unrestricted permission to work commercially in Australia. Start with the current AMSA requirements for the role you want.
Check the relevant sea service, medical, radio, first-aid, engineering and assessment requirements before choosing a course.
Depending on the work, this may include Coxswain, Master, Marine Engine Driver, engineering qualifications or STCW safety training.
Children and teenagers have dedicated participation pathways rather than needing to begin in adult yacht courses.
A junior pathway for younger sailors, commonly progressing through Tackers 1, 2 and 3.
A social sailing and watersports program aimed at teenagers, with a broad participation focus.

ASA 101 (Keelboat Sailing 1) is the American Sailing Association’s entry-level keelboat certification. The standard trains complete beginners to skipper a sloop‑rigged keelboat (approximately 20–27 ft) by day in light to moderate conditions (winds up to ~15 knots), covering basic terminology, points of sail, sail trim, helm commands, seamanship, navigation rules, safety procedures, docking, knots and essential on‑water maneuvers. Certification is awarded only after the candidate demonstrates required skills on the water and passes the written exam.

Coastal cruising, auxiliary yacht systems, anchoring, docking, navigation and seamanship.
The ASA 103 Coastal Cruising standard (American Sailing) prepares sailors to skipper a sloop-rigged, auxiliary-powered keelboat of about 25–35 ft by day in moderate winds (up to 20 knots) and sea conditions, covering boat systems, engine operation, docking, sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather and seamanship.
